William Vanderslice, Jr. Obituary

William Vanderslice, Jr., age 97, of Pennsville passed away Friday Nov. 7th at Christiana Medical Center, Newark, DE.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late William and Florence Brown Vanderslice, Sr.  Always a worker, Bill in his younger years worked on a trash truck and sold newspapers in front of Anchor Hocking. At the age of 16, he took a job with Anchor Glass loading box cars with glassware.

At age 20, Bill went to DuPont where he worked for a year before being drafted into the Army.  He spent two years being a military policeman in Berlin, Germany during the Korean War.  After 30 years of service at DuPont Carneys Point Works, he was transferred to the Experimental Station, retiring with 42 years of service.  In his retirement, Bill enjoyed dancing, taking care of his yard, going on day trips and traveling with the Pairs and Spares group.  Bill was a 1946 graduate of Salem High School where he served on the Reunion Committee.

Bill was a proud member of the North Bend Fire Company of Salem, a lifelong member of the Broadway United Methodist Church where he sang in the Junior Choir, and he was a member of the 759th Military Police Association who held reunions which Bill enjoyed.  Bill was also a member of the DuPont Pensioners Reunion Committee and a member of the New Jersey State Guard and the New Jersey Reserves.  In addition to his parents, Bill is predeceased by his wife, Gladys Batzel (1998); and seven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his three children, Michael Vanderslice, Kim Vanderslice and Lisa Mullen (Ken), all of Pennsville; his five grandchildren, Justin (Rachel), Melissa (Matt), Michal Vanderslice, Joshua Griscom (Hannah) and Jenna Griscom; and his eleven great grandchildren.
