Robert R. Parkell, age 88, of Lower Alloways Creek Township passed away Tuesday, January 23rd 2024.
Born in Salem, NJ he was the son of the late Roy E. and Bertha Traub Parkell. Robert was a 1953 graduate of Salem High School. Robert, a US Navy Veteran, enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served his country from 1953 -1956. While in the Navy he served in Korea as a Radar Instructor. Robert was employed at Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, MD as an electrician on the Van Guard Navy Project and the Matador Air Force Projects. He also worked for Atlantic City Electric Co. and the Deepwater Operating Co. for five years. After 28 1/2 years service, Robert retired in 1993 from E.I. DuPont Chambers Works as a refrigeration technician. He was a member of St. Mary's Church of Salem and a member of the Lower Alloway Creek Planning Board and Historical Society. He enjoyed fishing, duck carving and working on old cars and tractors.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years marriage, Martha Ropp Parkell; children, Beth A. Parkell (Smigelski), Joan C. Parkell (Yonko) and Roy A. Parkell; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 27th in St. Mary's Church, 25 Oak Street, Salem 08079. Family and friends may visit at WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 613 Salem Quinton Rd., Salem, NJ 08079 (Quinton Twp.) from 10:00 to 10:45 AM. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
