Richard Fogg “Dick” Young Obituary

Richard Fogg “Dick” Young, age 99, of Pilesgrove, NJ, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Friends Village, Woodstown, NJ, after a short illness.  

Dick was born on March 27, 1925, in Stow Creek Township, NJ, to Henry DeMott and Ida Cobb Young. He was joyfully married to Alice Shafer Young for over 67 years.  After graduating from Salem High School Dick enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Photographer’s Mate both taking and developing photographs in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Tokyo, Japan from November 1943 to April 1946. He was also a member of the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, photographing the results of the atomic explosions at Hiroshima in October 1945 during World War II. Following military service, Dick attended Tri-State College, in Angola, IN, where majored in Business Administration.  

Dick had a successful 43-year career in the insurance and real estate industry, joining his father’s business in Salem as an owner of Henry D. Young, Inc. until his retirement in 1990. Dick was a longtime member of the Memorial Baptist Church where he served on many boards and committees and sang in the choir.  Dick was one of the founders and a member of the Fenwick Community Ambulance Corps, a member of the Salem Rotary Club, served on the Salem Library Board, a member of the Salem County Real Estate Board, a trustee of Salem YMCA, trustee of the Salem Guidance Center, and secretary and director of the Salem County Chamber of Commerce. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) in 1957 in recognition of his loyal and untiring efforts on behalf of his community. Dick was elected as a member of the Salem County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1958, served as Director in 1961, and was reelected in 1961. Dick enjoyed family get-togethers, playing bocce ball and cards, sailing, reading, computer research, travel, watching the Phillies, and keeping in touch with friends and family. At Friends Village, he was an active member of the Resident Association, established the Friends Village Bocce Ball League, and was chosen as the 2024 Friends Village Senior Living Resident of the Year.

Dick is survived by his three children, Richard F. Young, Jr. (Mayanna) of Port Clinton, OH, Carol Y. Reese (George) of Salem, NJ, and Henry D. Young (Kathy) of Wilmington, DE; five grandchildren, Jordan Young, William Young (Jennifer), Jonathan Reese, Jason Reese (Shannon), and Jessica Henry (Jade); ten great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, two sisters, Julia Harris and Martha Apple, his brother, Charles Young, and a great-great-grandson, Cadence W. Riley.

Interment will be in Salem Baptist Cemetery in Salem, NJ, at the convenience of the family.
