Michael D. Smith, age 65, of Salem died peacefully at Compassionate Care Hospice in St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE on Monday, June 4th.
Born June 27th 1952, he is the son of the late Robert L. and Elizabeth Breslin Smith. Mike was a graduate of Salem High School and was employed by Mannington Mills for 46 years. He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. Mike was an avid pool player and he enjoyed playing poker with his buddies on Monday nights. He also looked forward to Friday nights at Uncle Dave Harris' social hour.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Kristie Korbel (Dan Lastowski) of Atlanta, GA and Susan Hicks (Brad) of LAC; granddaughter, Kelsey Hicks; stepson, Steven Schofield of DE; his sisters, Barbara Jean Gatanis (Rich), Patricia Rose and Deborah Pelura (John); his mother-in-law, Hazel Harris; niece, Kelly Deputy (Howard); nephews, Jeffrey List (Barb), John Pelura III (Kristen) and Michael Pelura (Jessie); as well as his extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife, Joanne; brother, Robert Smith; and brother-in-law, Jack Rose. Mike had a tremendous sense of humor and was always the life of the party. He had a heart of gold and was always there for everyone. Mike will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, June 8th in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 25 Oak Street Salem. Friends may call at WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 34 Oak Street, Salem from 9:30 to 10:45 AM on Friday and also Thursday evening, June 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
