Matt Ballenger Obituary

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, after a very sudden but peaceful passing, Matt Ritchie Ballenger took his final journey — from the beauty of God’s creation here on earth to the glory of Heaven above.

We take comfort knowing he met Jesus face to face and is now exploring the most beautiful wilderness of all. Matt was born on March 26, 1942, to his loving parents, Jack and Sophie Ballenger, and grew up in Elsinboro, New Jersey, with his younger brother, Jim.  A proud member of the Salem High School Class of 1960, he began his career at Mannington Mills. He married Ruth Finlaw, and together they raised two daughters, Tammy and Ann. He later worked as a pipefitter at DuPont Chamberworks until retiring in the 1990s, when he finally had more time for the things he loved.  He loved the outdoors from his teenage years, hunting and exploring whenever he could, and finally got to enjoy it full-time after retiring. He became a commercial crabber and spent much of his time outside — fishing, tending his garden, and caring for his animals, especially his dogs and cats. His garden and yard were a source of pride; he grew a variety of vegetables and always made sure to share the harvest with family and friends.  A true craftsman and tinkerer at heart, he loved John Deere, old engines, and anything that needed fixing. A jack of all trades — from carpentry and welding to auto mechanics — he spent hours restoring antiques and classic cars, happiest when he was elbow-deep in a project in his shop. If he didn’t know how to fix something, he could always find a part — or rig it to work even better than before.  He was a proud dad to two daughters and an even prouder “Poppop” to his grandchildren, Victoria, Garrett, and Bella — a role he loved more than anything. Always a bit of a prankster, he had a quick wit and a mischievous smile. He loved classic country and Oldies, and his loyalty to NASCAR, the Phillies, and the Eagles ran deep.  Whether cruising through town in his big red truck or hitting the open road on his motorcycle with Willie’s Roadhouse blaring on the radio, he loved the feeling of freedom and adventure. He never said no to good food — especially Chinese takeout — and kept himself moving, always sneaking in a workout whenever he could.  Matt’s faith ran deep and steady, much like the waters he loved. A Bible was never far from reach, and his handwritten scriptures could be found tucked in drawers and pockets. He quietly lived out his beliefs in his own way, finding comfort and guidance in the Gospel throughout his life.  He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Sophie Ballenger, his younger brother, Jim Ballenger, and his long-time companion, Cathy Wilson. He is survived by his eldest daughter, Tammy Donaldson, and her husband, Harry, their son, Garrett, and daughter, Chelsea, who has two children, Makenzie and Profitt; his youngest daughter, Ann Wheaton, and her husband, Gary, and their two daughters, Victoria and Isabella; and his beloved dog, Lady.  In true Matt fashion, he requested no big fuss, and instead, he asked that his family host a private pizza party in his honor. Though we’ll miss him dearly, we’ll remember him with smiles, laughter, and a few slices of pizza. We take comfort in knowing he is with Jesus, and it’s a “see you later,” not a goodbye.
