Francis L. "Speedy" Hogate died on December 21st at the Salem Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 79.
Speedy, as he was known to all, was a lifelong resident of Salem County. He was employed at A. Clemente construction and Greggo and Ferrara of Delaware. He was the longtime Superintendent of Roads and Bridges for Salem County, appointed in 1984 through his retirement. He attended Salem High School, Class of 1959, and was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church and the Salem Exchange Club. Known to many friends in Salem County, he enjoyed morning coffee at area diners, his favorite being the Salem Oak Diner.
Predeceased by his parents, Francis H. “Cap” and Flossie, he is survived by son, Douglas and daughter, Jayanne Sevast (Jason), grandchildren Douglas Jr., Ryan (Tara), Jenna (John), and Cainan, five great grandchildren, a brother, Thomas (Joan), and stepsister, Maryellen Harris (Joel). He is also survived by his ex-wife, Laraine Pfeffer (George), who he remained close friends with.
Visitation will be at WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 34 Oak St, Salem, on Tuesday, December 24th from 9:30-11:30 AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Elsinboro Fire Company, 35 Delaware Ave, Salem, NJ 08079
