Dr. Roy Joseph Sippel, 93, “Doc” known to many folks in Historic New Castle, DE passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2024.
Roy was born at home on May 18, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended St. Anthony’s grammar school in Pittsburgh and continued to high school at North Catholic. Roy graduated Valedictorian of the class. Played Varsity football and basketball. He was First Chair playing the trumpet for the Pittsburgh Jr. Symphony. At Princeton University he majored in Chemical Engineering. He played football and belonged to the Dial Lodge. Graduated in 1952 with a B.S.Ch.E., cum laude. Next Roy attended Carnegie Institute of Technology and received his Ph.D.Ch.E. As a summer job he worked at the DuPont Company’s Experimental Station. He started as a full time employee after graduation and was employed by DuPont from 1957-1978 in various management positions. In 1978 he joined Occidental Petroleum, Houston, TX, Marketing V.P. of their Chemical Division which was involved in the infamous “Love Canal” Program on “60” Minutes interacting with Mike Wallace. From 1980 (moved to Dallas, TX) to 1993 involved with a number of international companies including: Barlow Rand, RTZ, Rhone Poulenc. Roy ended his career with Octel UK developing one of his many patents. (Family moved to Atlanta, GA., 1987 with Rhone Poulenc until 1990. Sippel family moved to South Jersey and the “Sippel Chemical Consulting “ was established. Roy’s consulting took him to Ellesmere Port, England (and family) often. Their family business-Remsterville Learning Centers (RLC) kept them busy. Four locations; NJ Certified preschools. Roy served as CEO until his death. Settling in DE on the river retirement for Roy was welcomed.
The Mayor of Historic New Castle appointed Roy as a Commissioner on the Municipal Services Commission. He was later elected as President until he retired from the post. Roy enjoyed life, family, their summer shore home, snow skiing with the family in the Rockies and Utah. His favorite Mountain, Aspen and NASTAR Racing. Also they enjoyed skiing together in the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps. Off the mountains he enjoyed golf throughout the USA - the Sippel Open Tournament held yearly he enjoyed with his DuPont buddies at the DuPont Country Club; reading, chess, and Donna would drag him on the tennis courts; listening to classical music and fine wine. Mozart, John Denver, Jim Groce, and his best friend Buddy the Wonder Dog!
Roy is survived lovingly by his wife Donna Remster Sippel, his son Jonathan George (Anna Sippel); his five beloved grandchildren, Trinity, Kelly Lee, Michael, Snow, and Olivia as well as two nieces and three nephews and two great nephews; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law. Predeceased by: Pearl Luty Sippel , John Joseph Sippel, parents; Delores Sippel Taylor (sister), Bud Taylor - brother-in-law.
Funeral service for immediate family only.
A Mass will be held at the St Peter the Apostle Church in Historic New Castle, DE. A future date will be announced.
