Daniel Russell Hitchner

Daniel Russell Hitchner, age 86, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on Monday, June 11th, as a result of aggressive skin cancer.  He professed faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and is assured of eternal life through the resurrection.  He is survived by his children:  Marsha and Jeff Simpkins, Robin and Linda Hitchner, and Terri and Jay Probasco of Cohansey, and Julie Hitchner of Florida; grandchildren Bethany and Kevin Gibala and Jacob and Jesiann Hitchner of Cohansey, Nicole and Mike Robertson of Wyoming, Blake and Jessica Simpkins of Alaska, and Christopher and Erica McTyre of Philadelphia; great grandchildren Benjamin, Caleb and Eva Gibala, Layla and Grayson Robertson, and Hunter, Hannah, Hayden and Hudson Simpkins; and siblings Margie and Joe Hetzer, Geneva and Dick Hackett, Verna and Colson Iredell, Kim Hitchner, David and Peg Hitchner, Carol and Steve Quirk, Jon and Michele Hitchner, Bassett and Darlene Robbins, and Dottie Robbins. His dear friend, Priscilla Lawrence, was his faithful companion. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Janet (nee Robbins), his parents, Russ and Becky Hitchner, his brother, Grant, and brother-in-law, John Robbins.  

Dan was a lifelong resident of Alloway Township and graduated from Woodstown High School in 1950. He was an outstanding athlete and captain of the football and basketball teams. He enjoyed playing Hatchet League basketball and Salem County Civic League softball into his fifties.  He was a devoted fan of WHS sports teams and Cowtown Rodeo.  He farmed for 67 years and strived to be first to plant his crops. He worked hard and played hard. Favorite pastimes were hunting, jet skiing, and snowmobiling.  During the 1950s he was well known as floor manager of Russ’s Roller Rink in Bridgeton.  He was a lifetime member and faithful attendee of Pittsgrove Presbyterian Church, Daretown.

Services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday June 17th in Pittsgrove Presbyterian Church, 312 Daretown Road, Elmer NJ 08318.  Friends may call at the church Saturday evening, June 16th from 5 to 8 P.M.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers contributions in Dan's memory may be sent to the church at the above address.
