Charles E. (Sandy) Wentzell, age 102, of Salem, NJ passed away Thursday, September 4th 2025 at Inspira Medical Center, Mannington, NJ.
Born in Harmersville, NJ, he was the son of the late William and Anna Mae Campbell Wentzell. Sandy was a United States Air Force Veteran serving with the 95th bomb group as a side gunner on the B-17 in WWII and Korea. He was held as a Korean prisoner of war and was a Purple Heart recipient. Sandy was a life member of Cpl. Joseph C. Toulson Post 253, a member of the 95th Bomb Group US Air Force Memorial Foundation and a member of the Millville Army Airfield Museum. After serving his country and before his retirement, Sandy was a truck driver for Teamsters Local 676. He was a life member of Eagles Lodge No. 1966 of Salem. Sandy was a horse owner, trainer and jockey.
He is survived by his son, Charles Wentzell and his wife Kathleen; his grandchildren, Sandy Wentzell, Steven Wentzell and Michael Wentzell; his great grandchildren, Zachary, Leigha, Link, Zane, Emily, Erika, Kameron, Catalina, Amelia, Elena, Dylan and Jaxten; his companion, Evelyn Shuman; and close friends, Karen Tuthill, Victoria Bonecorse and John Shuman. Sandy is predeceased by his wife, the former, Irene Emmons.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 10th 2025 at WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 613 Salem Quinton Rd. Salem, NJ 08079 (located in Quinton Twp). Interment with Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday September 13th in the Salem County Veterans Cemetery, 719 Rt. 45, Pilesgrove, NJ 08098.
