Charles “Ike” Harris Obituary

Charles “Ike” S. Harris, Sr., age 81, of Lower Alloway’s Creek passed away on Tuesday, August 3rd at the Salem Medical Center with his family by his side.

Ike became an entrepreneur as a teenager when he acquired land and negotiated a contract with the H.J. Heinz Company to compost tomato byproducts from the Heinz plant located on Griffith Street in Salem, NJ. He later became an owner/operator who drove for Blue Diamond and was a member of the local Teamsters union. After retirement, he spent much of his time at “Ike’s Crab Shack” while working on his crabbing passion project. Ike enjoyed the simple things in life including talking politics, Busch beer, his “medicine”, chew tobacco and watching his favorite political shows. Ike is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Jean Vanneman; his children Brian (Dawn) Harris, Susan (Melvin) Remster, Bonnie (Jimmy) Hogate, Charles Harris, Jr, Aaron Harris and Crystal Harris as well as grandchildren Brooke, Brian “BJ”, Dustin, Andrew H., James, Hunter, Michael, Brandie, Andrew L., Albert, Zakary and Brody, 8 great-grandchildren as well as sisters Nina Kennedy and Elsie Sheehan. Ike was predeceased by his parents, Flora and Millard Harris, sons Donnie Harris & Eric Harris, his grandson Brandon Dean and other family members. 

The family will be honoring Ike’s wishes for there to be no services and they plan to spread his ashes in his favorite places.
