Joan Mulford Hassler, age 81, of Lower Alloway's Creek passed away Monday, August 19th at her home.
Born in the old Salem Hospital on October 25th 1937, she was the daughter of the late Wayne B. and Laura Lawrence Mulford. Joan attended Salem schools graduating from Salem High School, Class of 1955. She married William Hassler in 1958 and the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a party in June of 2018. Joan was active in politics and community affairs. She served on the boards of Meals of Wheels and YMCA and was the Chair of the Salem County Committee of Women where under her guidance instituted the still popular Women of Achievement Luncheon. She was honored by the group upon her retirement from the board. Joan served as Republican Municipal leader in both Salem and LAC. She was vice chair of the County Republican Organization and was the first woman to Salem City Council in 1978, serving until the family relocated to LAC township in 1984. Joan loved her church and was very active as an elder and choir member. She served on the fellowship, property and several pulpit nominating committees. Joan also chaired the 175 year anniversary celebration of the church in 1996. She volunteered for several years as a tutor at the churches after school program. She was vice chair of the Salem County Historical Society and chaired several annual dinners. Joan was employed by Smick Lumber over the past 25 years as a bookkeeper. In addition to her husband, Bill, she is survived by her sons, William Hassler, Jr. (Christine) of Pennsville, Kenneth Hassler (Brenda) of LAC, David Hassler of LAC and Douglas Hassler (Jaime) of LAC; Corey Vanneman and Whitney Vanneman Schrier who joined the family in March of 1970; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; brother, John O. Mulford (Barbara) of Hockessin, DE; brother-in-law, Ed Hassler (Sondra) of Elsinboro; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 1:00 PM, Sunday, August 25th in Salem Presbyterian Church, 88 Market Street, Salem. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. Burial will follow the church service at St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be sent to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Delaware Chapter, 1300 N.
