Barbara May Obituary

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, June 23, for Barbara S. May, 62, of Pennsville, a life-long native of Salem County and a retired US Postal Service employee, who passed away on Saturday, June 16, at Christiana Hospital.

Born in Salem, Barbara graduated from Salem High School where she was a member of the bowling team and lettered in Varsity Tennis.  She attended Glassboro State College, majoring in elementary education.  She worked for the US Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 2016. She lived in Pennsville for most of her adult life.  Barbara enjoyed bowling, playing intramural volleyball and slow-pitch softball. She was a member of the 1995 ASA National Championship Women’s Slow-Pitch team. She enjoyed gardening, riding her Harley and ATV, kayaking the local waterways, fall foliage trips, and cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.  Barbara loved the simple things – a drive in the country, a cone from Huddock’s, a tube of Chap Stick, a pizza from Pat’s, a movie in front of the TV on the couch.  When you went out with Barbara – whether it was for breakfast at a local diner or to spend a lucky 30%-off coupon – she would meet people she knew, through work or from town or through life in general.  Each time, she would greet these friends with a big smile, and a sparkle in her bright blue eyes.  She would inquire about how they were doing and ask about their family.  She remembered names and facts. She genuinely cared how people felt, and that was evident in her sincere and loving approach to living.  If she was ever having a bad day, you never knew it.

Barbara loved all animals and was a pet parent to many throughout her life. She was a master at the tickle-under-the-chin technique that made even the most aloof pets come over for more.  She was an avid birdwatcher, always maintaining a well-tended bird habitat in her yard.  Barbara was a member of the NJ Lighthouse Association and the Supawna Wildlife Refuge.  She served as a volunteer for many years at the Finns Point Lighthouse and Appel Farm Arts and Music Center.  Above all, Barbara was a loving, kind, loyal, and thoughtful person.  She was the cherished daughter of the late Donald, Sr. and Elizabeth (Shuman) May. She is survived by siblings - Donald, Jr. (Marsha), Gary (Beth), and Nancy Hart (Scott); her nieces and nephews - Jeffrey May (Patti), Mandy Feeney (Matthew), Jeremy May (Sarah), Amy Minsker (Ryan); several great-nieces and great-nephews; and her adored pets, Snowball, Shadow, George, and Fluffy Jack. Please join us in a celebration of Barbara’s life.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Viewing on Friday, June 22 from 6-8 PM and Saturday from 10:00-10:45 AM at WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 34 Oak St., Salem, NJ.  A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 23 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 25 Oak St., Salem, NJ.
